School Workshops

For the past few years, I have presented a variety of workshops in schools, mostly based around creative writing. My workshops have been held across Cumbria and extend to Dumfries and Galloway.

I often incorporate work from my book, 'The Creative Writing Textbook for Children', in the workshops. I also offer readings from my fiction book, 'The Boy Who Broke the School'. Please visit the publisher's website for more details: www.winterwitch.co.uk

Presentation and Creative Thinking Workshops

These are similar to the workshops and courses I offer to businesses. They are aimed at increasing confidence when giving presentations and speaking in front of other people. The aim is to build from working in small groups to being able to present to the whole class, or even the assembly.

These workshops are adapted to suit different age groups and curriculum needs. In the secondary age groups, they can be used for confidence building in Years 7-9 and GCSE support in Years 10-11.

In Primary age groups, the workshops can have quite dramatic results in increasing confidence and creative thinking. The work is accessible to varying abilties as it does not have to involve lots of writing. Pictures and swapping ideas can also support the presentations, with a mixture of styles within the class groups.

Please contact me if you would like further details of how this might work for your school.

Picture This! series of workshops

I am currently organising a new series of workshops, aimed at creative confidence in Primary age children. These have been specially designed to build confidence in creative writing and general literacy. Using visual aids and the children's own class and school environment, these workshops are part of my combined approach to creative learning. The activities I use have been particularly useful with children who normally avoid creative work. They are suitable for mixed ability groups. Work is completed individually, as well as in pairs or small groups.

These workshops can be presented as a stand-alone hour long class, or as the full set of five sessions, which lead one from the other, becoming more challenging as the children gain confidence.
